Felting with Moy Mackay

on

I grew up surrounded with felted pieces. Maybe this actually is my drive to this amazing material and souse of inspiration?

Traditional Kazakh rug.

Russian national winter felt boots.

Whatever it is, it does fascinates me. And even more than material itself I am fascinated with the creativity of people who breathe so many new forms and shapes and ideas I this rather humble material!

All those enhanced the material, and promoted it to state of art clothing collections including wedding accessories and even dresses, art , craft, house decoration, toys, shoes … you name it.

Obviously, to cover all these, different technics are used. I decided to challenge myself to learn some bits about this ancient material which has deep roots with my childhood and previous life and is welcomed now as a great old friend.

I made a start with the guidance of Moy Mackay and her book Art in Felt & Stitch.

I like Moy’s visual guidance in the book and clear description of each step one should take to accomplish a project. She gives some inspirational examples of her work and inspires you to follow her and to paint with wool.

Here is the result of the fist stage of the project – Felting.

I had encounter a problem of lucking some of colours I needed for the composition but I hope to enhance it on the stage of stitching.

In this project I had used wet felting technic. I also used needle technic to ensure that all elements were in place as I anted them to be – more or less.
